Prepare for Your Trip
Getting out here doesn’t require anything extreme, but a little preparation goes a long way. The more prepared you are, the more you’ll get out of the experience.
What to Expect
Trips are built around real conditions, not a fixed script. That means route, pace, and terrain may shift based on weather, trail conditions, and the group.
You can expect:
Uneven terrain (curbs, roots, rocks, sand, mud, elevation changes)
Variable weather (even in a single day)
A pace that matches the group, with breaks as needed
The goal isn’t to rush, it’s to move well through the landscape and actually experience it.
What to Bring
You’re responsible for your own gear. You don’t need anything fancy, just solid basics:
Essentials
Sturdy footwear (trail shoes or boots with good traction)
Weather-appropriate clothing (avoid cotton; bring layers)
Water (at least 1–2 liters/person)
Snacks or lunch depending on trip length
Strongly Recommended
Rain layer
Small backpack
Bug protection (season dependent)
Sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen/UPF clothing)
If you’re unsure about anything, ask so we can sort that out ahead of time.
Weather & Conditions
Conditions in the UP change quickly. A forecast is a starting point, not a guarantee.
Expect temperature swings, especially near the lake
Rain can come and go
Trails can be wet, muddy, or buggy depending on the season
I’ll factor all of this into the plan and follow up if anything significant shifts.
Bugs (Seasonal Reality)
Depending on the time of year, insects can be part of the experience.
Spring/early summer: mosquitoes and black flies
Mid-summer: stable flies, deer flies
Late summer: generally better, but still present
A little preparation (repellent, layers, head nets) makes a big difference.
Fitness & Experience
You don’t need to be an expert, but you should be comfortable:
Walking for several hours
Navigating uneven ground
Carrying your own gear
If you have concerns about fitness or experience, say so. Trips can be adjusted, but honesty upfront matters.
Safety
Your safety is taken seriously.
I carry first aid and emergency communication (GPS/inReach)
Routes are chosen with conditions and group ability in mind
Decisions in the field are made conservatively
You’re expected to:
Communicate openly if something feels off
Follow guidance during the trip
